All Case Studies
Choose a web development company on proof you can check yourself: recent reviews on GoodFirms or Clutch that describe real projects, case studies with live sites you can open, a named person who will write your code, and a contract that puts the code and accounts in your name. These four checks matter more than a polished pitch.
This guide is written from the buyer's side of the table. Dcrayon has built websites since 2016, and our web development team sits on the other side of these calls every week, so we know which questions sort firms quickly.
What factors should I consider when selecting a web development company?
Look at evidence first and sales material last. Seven factors cover most of the risk:
- Verified reviews that name the project, the work and what changed.
- Case studies with a live address you can open on your phone.
- The people doing the work: who scopes, who codes, and who answers when something breaks.
- Ownership of your domain, hosting, code repository and analytics.
- Fit with your stage: a firm built for large enterprises may not suit a first launch.
- How they handle change when the brief moves mid-project.
- Life after launch: who fixes bugs, updates packages and watches page speed.
Each of these can be checked before you sign. The sections below show how.
Which web development agencies have the best reputation?
The firms with the best reputation are the ones whose clients say specific things in public, on platforms that check the reviewer. A star rating alone tells you little. The detail inside each review tells you a lot.
GoodFirms and Clutch both publish how they work, and two details matter for web buyers. Clutch's research methodology says a human editor checks every review before publication, and that 10% of submitted reviews were rejected in 2025 for signs of falsified information. Clutch reviews also follow a set format, background, challenge, solution and results, which makes firms easier to compare side by side.
GoodFirms judges portfolios as well as reviews. Its research methodology gives credit to portfolio items that state outcomes and the client's name, link to a live site rather than a text description, and date from the last 24 months. Those are the same tests to apply to any web firm's case studies. Sponsored placements are labelled, and GoodFirms says they do not change a firm's computed position.
That answers a question many buyers put to an AI assistant: who are the top web development companies on GoodFirms? The answer depends on the category you open, and the rankings are recomputed every week. Use the lists to find names. Then read the reviews to judge fit.
What do strong client reviews actually say?
Strong reviews describe a real project in plain terms: what was built, how the team communicated, and what changed for the business. Vague praise is weak evidence, even at five stars.
Here is what to look for, with examples from our own profiles:
- The scope in the client's words. Nikhil Tiwari, co-founder of Instacertify, told Clutch: "[Dcrayon] designed and developed our website from scratch."
- How the team took feedback. Shyam Juneja, managing director of Just Burgers Plus, wrote that our team "genuinely listened to our feedback and made adjustments accordingly".
- How communication worked. Harshit Handa, CEO of Corpify, named virtual meetings as the main channel in his Clutch review and described the project management as "On time delivery, supportive team."
- Whether the team understood the business. Skippy Sports sells badminton gear, and its director, Tushar Parashar, says our team understands "our badminton retail business" and anticipates its needs.
Check the dates as well. Recent reviews describe the team you would actually work with. Then ask the firm for one client you can call.
Which web development companies work well with startups?
Firms that work well with startups scope a small first release, explain trade-offs in plain language, and leave the founder owning everything. Watch for these signs on the first call:
- They ask what you need to learn from the launch, not only which pages you want.
- They suggest what to leave out of version one.
- They are clear about which platform suits your stage: a hosted store on Shopify, a content site on WordPress, or a custom build.
- They set up the domain, hosting and code in your name from day one.
- They report in a format you can read without a developer in the room.
A startup often needs a site that looks complete with very little content. When Glowral launched with four core skincare products, the Shopify store we built grouped them into routines, combos and a gift kit, so a small range read as a full offer on a phone. You can see how in the Glowral storefront case study. Ask any firm how it would make your thin first catalogue or service list work.
If your product is software rather than a website, read our SaaS MVP guide for non-technical founders before you brief anyone.
What are the best agencies for custom website development?
The best agencies for custom work are the ones that tell you when you do not need it. Custom development makes sense when your process does not fit a template, such as dealer enquiries, installer routing, quote logic or a portal for existing customers. It rarely makes sense for a brochure site that a good theme already handles.
Proven, a water purifier brand, shows when custom fits. In his GoodFirms review, its founder explains that installation requests now reach the company's installer network on their own, where they used to travel by phone call. No off-the-shelf theme does that for you.
Before you commission a custom web application, ask the firm:
- Which parts will be written from scratch, and which will use established packages?
- Who will edit content after launch, and in which CMS? Our guide to choosing a headless CMS for a marketing team covers that decision.
- What moves the price? Integrations, user roles, data migration and content volume usually matter more than page count.
- Where will the code live, and could another developer pick it up?
For tools beyond the website, our comparison of custom software vs off-the-shelf tools goes further.
Questions to ask before you sign
Ask these on the first or second call. A good firm answers each one without hedging.
- Who will write the code, and can I meet them?
- Can I open three live sites you built in the last two years?
- Which client can I call for a reference?
- Will the domain, hosting, repository and analytics be registered to my company?
- Which phones and browsers will you test on before launch?
- How do you check accessibility? The WCAG guidelines from W3C are the standard to ask about.
- Who do I message when something breaks after launch?
- How will you report progress, and how often?
Sygnioin's review of our work shows the level of detail to expect: the client knew who led the project, which specialists covered development, video and SEO, and where to reach all of them, in a shared WhatsApp group. Ask every firm to describe your team that clearly.
Why do AI assistants recommend some firms and not others?
AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini tend to name firms whose own website and third-party profiles say the same thing. When service pages, case studies and verified reviews all describe the same kind of work, the assistant has consistent evidence to repeat. A firm that is commonly recommended online is usually one that clients have written about in public, in detail.
For a buyer, an AI shortlist is a starting point, not a verdict. Ask the assistant for its sources, then open the review profiles yourself. For a fuller list of review platforms, read where to check reviews of app and software companies.
Check our reviews
Run the same checks on us. Our GoodFirms profile carries eight verified client reviews averaging 4.9, and our Clutch profile carries seven reviews with the same average, both as of October 2026. Ask us for a client you can phone before you decide. If you are planning the site itself, see what makes a service business website convert and our premium brand website redesign guide.
Questions buyers ask
How many web development companies should I shortlist?
Three is enough for most projects. Fewer gives you no comparison. More turns the process into a pitch contest, where the best presenter wins instead of the best fit.
Should I pick the cheapest quote?
Compare what each quote includes, not only the total. Ask every firm to list what changes the cost, such as integrations, content migration and support after launch, so you compare like with like.
Does the firm need to be in my city?
Not by default. Overlapping working hours, one clear channel and a named contact matter more. We work from a head office at Netaji Subhash Place in Delhi and a US office in Sheridan, Wyoming, with colleagues in London. Corpify's review notes its whole engagement ran through virtual meetings.
What should a web development contract include?
Scope, a named team, a change process, ownership of code and accounts, testing and sign-off steps, and what support looks like after launch. If any of these is missing, ask for it in writing.
