All Case Studies
To compare digital marketing agencies fairly, judge each one on evidence you can check yourself: verified reviews on GoodFirms and Clutch, case studies with the client's name and dates, a sample monthly report, and a small paid task done by the people who would run your account. Put every agency through the same checks before you discuss fees.
Most agency pitches sound alike, so proof is what separates them. This guide comes from our digital strategy work, where the same checks decide which channels a plan should rely on. If you still need to set goals and a budget, start with How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency That Aligns with Your Business Goals? This post picks up once you have a shortlist and need to test what each agency claims.
Which digital marketing agencies have the strongest reputation, and how can you check it?
Reputation you can rely on lives on review platforms that check reviewers and publish their rules, not on an agency's own testimonials page.
On Clutch, two badges look alike but mean different things. A Verified badge on a review means Clutch confirmed who wrote it. "Clutch Verified" on a company is a paid check of its registration and credit. Neither one measures marketing results. The more useful signal for a marketing buyer is Clutch Certified, which its research methodology says appears on a service only when the firm has at least three verified reviews from the past 24 months, rated 4.0 or higher and tagged to that service. Look for it on the SEO, paid media or social media lines you actually need.
GoodFirms scores firms partly on how they behave before a sale. Its research methodology includes the average time a firm takes to answer buyer enquiries, plus a mystery shopper check in which researchers pose as prospective clients and rate the sales process. A firm that is slow or vague with a stranger is unlikely to improve once you sign.
When you read marketing reviews, look for four things:
- An outcome: traffic, leads, sales or rankings, rather than "great team".
- The channels: which work the agency ran, such as SEO, social or paid campaigns.
- The running of the work: how reporting, deadlines and changes were handled.
- A person: a reviewer with a name and role you can look up.
How do you compare campaign performance across agencies?
Compare like with like: the same kind of metric, over a stated period, measured from a stated starting point.
A case study is the agency's own account, so treat it as a claim to test. A useful one names the client, gives dates, lists the platforms and describes what was done. GoodFirms itself rates portfolio items on whether they include outcomes, metrics and a client name, and on live links and recent work. Open the client's site and see whether it matches what you read.
The strongest proof pairs the agency's account with the client's own words. Our Glowral case study sets out the method: an SEO audit, a keyword map sorted by shopper intent, rewrites of seven product pages and a blog that had reached 54 posts by 27 December 2025. The case study publishes no traffic figures of its own. Those come from the client: Glowral's CFO posted the results in a verified review on our Clutch profile. The method comes from us; the numbers come from the client, in the client's own words on a third-party site.
Notice, too, what a case study chooses not to claim. Our Cartense case study covers SEO, 45-second YouTube Shorts and influencer work from February to April 2026, and says plainly that commercial figures for that engagement are not published. When an agency quotes a percentage with no period or starting point, ask for both before you give it weight.
How do you judge industry expertise for startups and growing businesses in India?
Ask for work in your category, for buyers like yours, that you can open and check today.
Expertise shows in how well an agency understood the way your product is bought. Cartense sells car key covers, and its buyers search by car model and key type rather than for "key cover". A plan built from that list of models shows category knowledge. Glowral, a young skincare brand with a small range, could not expect to win broad searches against large brands soon, so its plan aimed at specific searches each product could realistically own. For a startup, that kind of realism is worth more than a wall of big-brand logos.
For Indian startups and growing businesses, also ask:
- Which platforms the team works in every week, such as Google Ads, Meta, Shopify, Amazon India and YouTube.
- Whether they have run accounts for brands at your stage, not only for large ones.
- Which partner badges they hold, and where the issuer lists them. Amazon Ads keeps a public partner directory, and a badge on an agency's site should match the issuer's own listing.
For the record, Dcrayon holds Amazon Ads Verified Partner status, has been a Shopify Partner since December 2020 and appears in the Amazon Service Provider Network, so you can run this check on us too.
How do you check proven ROI before you sign?
Ask for a sample monthly report from a current client, with names removed, and read how it handles leads and revenue.
A report shows how an agency thinks once the pitch is over. Look for spend by channel, leads and qualified leads counted apart, the cost of each qualified lead, and a plain note on what the tracking can and cannot attribute. If every figure is an undated platform screenshot, expect to read undated screenshots every month. Our guide to what a good marketing report shows lists each section and what to leave out.
Then put the same question to every agency: "Which number will you report to me each month, and where does it come from?" Firms that name a source, such as Google Analytics 4, Search Console, Google Ads or your CRM, are far easier to compare than firms that answer with "growth".
How do you test the team before a long contract?
Pay for one small, defined piece of work and judge the people doing it, not the people who pitched it.
Good first tasks include an audit of your site or ad account with a written fix list, one month on a single channel, or a working session in which the strategist critiques your live account. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO suggests giving an auditor read access only to Search Console at that stage, and checking past clients as references.
During the test, watch for:
- Whether the person on the calls is the person doing the work.
- Whether they ask about your business before proposing tactics.
- Whether they ask for data and documents, and say so when something is missing.
- Whether their written answers are clear enough to forward to your finance team.
Clients notice these things. Reviewing our website, eBay store and performance marketing work on GoodFirms, Tushar Parashar, Director of Skippy Sports, wrote: "Their team is genuinely proactive - they understand our badminton retail business, anticipate our needs, and bring thoughtful ideas without waiting to be asked."
An evidence sheet for every agency
Keep one sheet per agency and fill it in only from what you have seen yourself:
- Reviews: the outcomes reviewers state, the channels they name, and any Clutch Certified service lines.
- Case studies: client, dates, scope, published numbers and a live link you opened.
- Sample report: whether qualified leads and attribution limits appear.
- Paid first task: who did it, and what you would act on from it.
- Badges: each one matched to the issuer's directory.
Hiring for an app or a software build as well? We cover the review platforms for those firms in a separate guide for app and software buyers.
Check our reviews
Hold us to the same evidence sheet. Eight verified reviewers on GoodFirms give us an average of 4.9, and seven reviewers on Clutch give the same 4.9, counted in October 2026. Nirwana Jewellers' chief executive put one point simply in a Clutch review: "They ensure all campaigns go live as scheduled without delays." The same checks apply whether you are comparing teams for search engine optimization, pay-per-click advertising or social media marketing.
Questions buyers ask
Are Clutch and GoodFirms rankings paid for?
Both sell paid placement, and both state that paying does not alter the score behind a firm's position. Paid slots carry a label, so weigh the reviews themselves above where a firm appears on the page.
Should I trust an agency's own testimonials page?
Treat it as a lead, not as proof. Look for the same client on GoodFirms or Clutch, or ask the agency to put you in touch with them directly.
Is a large agency safer for a startup?
Size matters less than who works on your account. Ask who will run it day to day, meet that person, and give them the paid first task.
What if an agency has no reviews yet?
Ask for two client references you can call, case studies with live links, and a short paid task. Let the result of that task be your main evidence.
