WordPress website development services in Edmonton

Dcrayon designs, builds and maintains WordPress sites for Edmonton businesses. We work remotely from Delhi, India, with a named human lead accountable for every engagement, and we build to Alberta's own privacy law rather than a generic Canadian template.

Who is buying in Edmonton

Small firms as a share of Edmonton establishments0%

The City of Edmonton's 2025 Business Census identified 29,894 businesses employing 575,197 people. Excluding public administration, businesses with fewer than 100 staff made up 97 per cent of establishments and 61 per cent of employment, and the average establishment employs 19 people. Your site is almost always selling to or competing with an owner-operator, not a procurement department.

Top five sectors as a share of all Edmonton businesses0%

Retail trade, other services, accommodation and food services, real estate and rental and leasing, and health care and social assistance together account for 62 per cent of Edmonton businesses and 43 per cent of jobs, according to the same 2025 Business Census. Four of those five sell locally, which makes location pages, service pages and booking flows the parts of a WordPress build that actually earn money.

Growth in the Edmonton business count, 2024 to 20250%

Statistics Canada business counts published on the Alberta Regional Dashboard put the Edmonton region at 40,278 businesses in 2025, up from 39,092 in 2024, a rise of 3.03 per cent. That regional count is wider than the City's own census figure above, which is why the two numbers differ. Either way, more competitors enter the same search results every year, so an unmaintained site loses ground even when nothing about it changes.

What a WordPress build costs

Median web developer wage in the Edmonton region (Job Bank Canada)0%

Job Bank Canada reports a median of $40.35 an hour for web developers in the Edmonton region, with a low of $27.43 and a high of $60.27, updated 19 November 2025 against 2024 reference data. That is a salary line only. It does not include employer overhead, design, QA, hosting or project management, which is why quoted agency rates sit well above it.

Alberta average for web developers and programmers (alis Alberta)0%

The 2023 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey reported an average of $36.51 an hour and $73,575 a year for NOC 21234, with starting wages averaging $30.12 and top-end wages averaging $43.91. Use these two ranges to sanity-check any Edmonton quote you receive, ours included.

Why WordPress and not a proprietary platform (W3Techs)0%

WordPress runs about 41 per cent of all websites, per W3Techs data checked in early August 2026. The reason that matters in Edmonton is supplier risk: with a business base this small-firm heavy, the person who built your site can change job, move city or stop answering, and a standard WordPress build can be picked up by any developer in the wage band above without a rebuild. A proprietary platform turns that ordinary event into a re-quote.

The wider Edmonton region

Edmonton is Alberta's capital city, and that changes what a website has to do here. Government, health authorities, the post-secondary sector and energy-services and industrial suppliers give the city a buyer mix built around tenders, grant panels, accreditation checks and technical specification, not just consumer browsing. A site that reads well to a procurement officer, an industrial buyer verifying a safety certification, and a homeowner booking a trade all at once is a harder brief than a straight retail build, and it is the brief most Edmonton organisations actually have.

121,699

Read together, these figures point one way. Edmonton is growing faster than any other Canadian metro area, the business base is overwhelmingly small, and the buyers include public and industrial organisations that check things. A WordPress site here has to be fast, credible on the detail, and cheap enough to keep updating for years.

Alberta privacy law

Alberta has its own private-sector privacy law

This is the single biggest reason an Edmonton WordPress build is not a copy of a Toronto or Halifax one. Most provinces leave private-sector privacy to the federal PIPEDA regime. Alberta does not. Provincially regulated Alberta organisations fall under the Personal Information Protection Act, and section 34.1 of PIPA requires you to report a breach to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta without unreasonable delay whenever there is a real risk of significant harm to an individual. The OIPC's own breach guidance reads significant harm broadly enough to cover reputational damage, lost business or professional opportunity and identity theft, not only financial loss. Failing to report is an offence, and PIPA sets fines of up to $10,000 for an individual and up to $100,000 for an organisation. The law is also in motion: Alberta's Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship completed its statutory review in February 2025 with 12 recommendations, and the Government of Alberta ran a public survey on modernising PIPA from 2 to 17 February 2026 covering harmonisation with other legislation, individual rights and regulatory oversight. In practical WordPress terms this shapes real build decisions. Every contact form, quote request, booking widget and newsletter signup is a collection point, so we write the consent language on the form itself rather than burying it in a policy page, keep a plain record of what each form collects and where the data goes, set retention on stored submissions instead of letting entries accumulate in the database forever, and audit which plugins quietly ship personal data to a third-party service. We also build the access-request path, because PIPA gives individuals a right to their own information and someone in your organisation has to be able to find it.

WordPress builds that suit Edmonton sectors

The same platform, configured very differently depending on who is reading the page. These are the six patterns we see most often across the Edmonton business base described in the 2025 Business Census.

Public sector and grant-funded

Capital city, capital-city buyers Agencies, associations and non-profits serving Alberta government and health bodies need accessible, well-structured pages, downloadable documents that are properly labelled, and board or funder information that is easy to verify. We build these on a locked-down editor role set so staff can publish updates without touching layout or breaking accessibility markup.

Post-secondary and research spinouts

Explaining something technical to a non-technical buyer Companies coming out of Edmonton's research base usually have a hard technology and a soft explanation problem. The WordPress work is a clear product architecture, a publications or evidence section that stands up to scrutiny, and a contact path that captures the enquiry properly rather than dumping a name into an inbox.

Energy services and industrial supply

Selling into the Industrial Heartland Suppliers to the 40-plus operating companies in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, the 582 sq km cluster north east of the city, get judged on capability, certification and spec detail. We build filterable product and capability catalogues, downloadable data sheets, safety and certification pages, and RFQ forms that ask the questions your estimators actually need answered.

Trades and home services

Where local search decides the enquiry Service-area pages that are genuinely different from one another rather than a template with the neighbourhood name swapped in, a quote form that works on a phone in a driveway, review integration, and a booking or callback flow. This is the build where page speed converts directly into calls.

Health care and professional practices

Where PIPA bites hardest Clinics, therapists, accountants and law firms collect sensitive information through their websites. We keep intake data out of the WordPress database where we can, route it to a system you control, document retention, and make sure the consent wording on the form matches what you actually do with the submission.

Retail and hospitality

Two of the top five sectors in the 2025 census WooCommerce or a lean brochure-plus-menu build depending on what you sell, with local search structured data, opening hours that stay accurate, and payment and shipping set up for Canadian tax and delivery realities rather than a US default configuration.

How we work

How a WordPress engagement runs with Dcrayon

No mystery phases. Here is what actually happens on an Edmonton build, including the parts clients usually find out about too late.

  1. 1
    Free audit, written down

We review your current site or your brief for speed, security exposure, search visibility and, specifically, where every form sends personal information, because under Alberta's PIPA that accountability sits with you and not with your host or your plugin vendor. Findings come in writing. If the honest answer is a cheaper fix than a rebuild, we say so, and you keep the audit whether or not you hire us.

  2. 2
    Mapping every collection point

Before layout, we agree the page structure and URL plan, then list each contact form, quote request, booking widget and newsletter signup as a personal-information collection point, with what it collects, where the data lands and how long it is kept. That list is what makes a PIPA access request answerable later, and building it now is far cheaper than reconstructing it after a site is live.

  3. 3
Building for a capital-city buyer mix

Edmonton pages usually have to satisfy more than one reader at once, so the build is shaped around whichever mix applies to you: accessible structure and properly labelled documents for public sector and grant-funded readers, capability and certification detail for industrial supply buyers, and fast service-area pages and phone-first quote forms for trades. Block-based editing throughout, so your own staff can update copy without a developer and without breaking the accessibility markup.

  4. 4
    Testing, migration and launch

Cross-browser and mobile testing, real submissions pushed through every form including RFQ forms that have to reach an estimator, and redirect mapping from every old URL so search visibility survives the move. Launches are scheduled inside the Edmonton morning overlap described below, so someone is awake at both ends while DNS settles. Hosting and domain access are handed over in your name, not ours.

  5. 5
Maintenance while the competitor count rises

Core, theme and plugin updates on a schedule, offsite backups, uptime and security monitoring, and a regular review of which Edmonton service pages are actually producing enquiries. The regional business count grew about three per cent in a year, so the search results you rank in are refilled annually by new entrants. A site left alone loses ground even when nothing about it changes, which is why maintenance is the engagement rather than an add-on.

Mountain Time overlap

How Delhi hours line up with Edmonton

Dcrayon has no Edmonton office and no Alberta staff, and we say so before you ask. The team works from Delhi and delivers remotely, so the practical question is the clock. Edmonton sits on Mountain Time at UTC-6 and Delhi runs at UTC+5:30, a steady gap of eleven and a half hours, which puts nine in the morning in Edmonton at eight-thirty in the evening in Delhi and gives a genuine live overlap for calls, reviews, approvals and launch days. Alberta moved in 2026 to end seasonal clock changes and hold the province at UTC-6 all year, as reported by Global News, so unlike most Canadian markets that overlap does not shift twice a year: the standing slot you agree in March still works in November, and nobody has to recalculate a launch window against a clock change. Where the work genuinely needs a person standing in Edmonton, a photo shoot, a site visit, an in-person pitch, we will tell you to hire locally for that piece rather than quote for something we cannot do.
Questions we get asked

WordPress questions from Edmonton buyers

No. Dcrayon works from Delhi, India, and delivers to Edmonton clients remotely. We say this up front because plenty of listings imply a local presence that does not exist. If part of your project needs someone physically in Edmonton, we will tell you to hire locally for that part.

Start from the labour benchmark rather than the sticker price. Job Bank Canada puts the median web developer wage in the Edmonton region at $40.35 an hour, with a high of $60.27, updated 19 November 2025. The 2023 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey reported an average of $36.51 an hour for NOC 21234. Any agency quote has to cover that wage plus design, QA, project management and overhead. Ask every provider, us included, to break their number into those parts, and ask what the ongoing maintenance figure is before you compare totals.

It means every form on the site is a collection of personal information that you are accountable for. Section 34.1 of PIPA requires reporting a breach to Alberta's Information and Privacy Commissioner without unreasonable delay where there is a real risk of significant harm, and PIPA fines run to $10,000 for an individual and $100,000 for an organisation. So we write consent language onto the forms themselves, document what each form collects and where it goes, set retention on stored submissions, check which plugins send data to third parties, and make sure someone at your end can answer an access request. Alberta's legislature committee reviewed PIPA in February 2025 and the province consulted on modernising it in February 2026, so we build with headroom for tighter rules rather than to the current minimum.

Both, but do not assume Canada mirrors the global mobile-first picture. Statcounter's July 2026 figures for Canada show desktop at 56.09 per cent of traffic, mobile at 41.25 per cent and tablet at 2.67 per cent. For an Edmonton business selling into public sector, industrial or professional buyers, a meaningful share of your traffic is a person at a desk during working hours. We design responsively, then check your own analytics before deciding which experience gets the extra polish.

Usually yes as a companion to your main domain, and sometimes as the primary. CIRA's 2025 Canadian Internet Trends report, based on an online survey of 2,000 Canadian adult internet users in March 2025, found 64 per cent prefer to shop online from Canadian retailers when given the choice, with more than half citing support for the local economy as the main reason. A .ca signals that quickly. We will register or transfer it in your name and point both domains at one canonical site so search engines do not see duplicate content.

By treating maintenance as the ongoing engagement. Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026 report recorded 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem during 2025, up 42 per cent on 2024, with 91 per cent of them in plugins and only six in WordPress core. It also found 46 per cent of those vulnerabilities had no patch available at the time of disclosure. So we keep the plugin count deliberately small, subscribe to vulnerability feeds rather than waiting for an update prompt, run a web application firewall, keep offsite backups you can restore from, and remove plugins whose developers have gone quiet.

You do, completely. Domain, hosting account and WordPress administrator credentials are in your name from the start. The build uses standard WordPress and standard plugins, not a proprietary page builder that only we can operate, so any other developer can pick it up. We do not hold access as leverage on a maintenance renewal.
